Water Footprint Calculation

Water Footprint Calculation

Water footprint shows the extent of water use based on consumption by humans. The water footprint of an individual, community or business is defined as the total volume of freshwater consumed by the individual or community or used to produce goods and services produced by the business. Water use is measured as the volume of water consumed (evaporated) and/or polluted per unit time. Water footprint is a single process (such as rice growing) for any well-defined group of consumers (e.g., individual, family, village, city, province, state, or nation) or producers (e.g., public organization, private enterprise, or economic sector). or can be calculated for any product or service.

The water footprint of a business, the ‘enterprise water footprint’, is defined as the total volume of freshwater used directly or indirectly to run and support a business. It is the total volume of water use that will be associated with the use of business outputs. A business’s water footprint consists of water used for production/manufacturing or support activities and indirect water use in the manufacturer’s supply chain.
